Every year around this time, I get the same phone call. Someone has decided to propose over the holidays, they've just started thinking about the ring, and they want to know if it's too late.

Sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it is. The difference usually comes down to timing, so here is what the process really looks like, and where the deadlines fall this year.

The Timeline, Step by Step

1. First consultation (1 day)
We schedule a call to discuss your partner’s style, the diamond shape and size you’re considering, your budget, and any inspiration photos you’ve collected.

2. In-person or video meeting (1–7 days)
We usually need only one meeting, although a second may be helpful for some designs.

We meet at my Michigan Avenue office or by video to review loose diamonds or gemstones and stock settings (rings that are ready for a center stone). Many clients bring a photo of a ring they love, and we use it as a starting point. You will choose the center stone, outline the design with me, and provide a deposit so we can proceed.

3. Design and approval (approximately 7–10 days)
I create 3D renderings so you can see the ring before it is made. This is the easiest stage for making changes. Most designs need few or no revisions, but each additional revision can add up to a week to the timeline.

4. Crafting (7–10 days)
Once you approve the design, a model of the ring is created from the CAD design using 3D printing. The ring is then cast in your chosen metal, polished, and set with its gems. Every stage is completed locally by our expert craftspeople.

5. Finishing, sizing, and inspection (1 day)
Before a ring leaves my hands, I check every stone and prong. Then I create an appraisal for your insurance.

6. Shipping (1–2 days)
If you live outside the area, allow up to two days for overnight shipping. Holiday weather and higher package volumes can cause delays, so building two shipping days into your schedule is the safest approach.

All told, plan on roughly three to four weeks from your first consultation to the finished ring, and allow additional time if the design requires revisions or the ring must be shipped.

2026 Holiday Deadlines

  • Custom-designed rings: begin your design by December 1 for Christmas delivery. However, I suggest starting in November to be on the safe side.

  • Stock-setting rings (a ready-made setting with your chosen diamond or gem): order by December 16

  • Redesigns of existing jewelry: bring your piece in by December 1, but it’s better to start in November

  • Engraving: December 15

  • Hanukkah proposals: start by November 5.

Running Late? You Still Have Options

If you've missed the custom deadline, you aren't out of luck.

  • Choose a stock setting. We can pair a setting from our collection with a diamond you choose, and it can often be ready much faster than a fully custom piece. This usually takes a few days to a week.

  • Propose now, finish the ring later. Many couples choose the final design together afterward, and some prefer it that way. You can propose with a placeholder ring or present the diamond in a beautiful display box.

How to Speed Things Up

  • Know your partner’s ring size. If you’re hoping to keep the proposal a surprise, borrow a ring your partner wears on the ring finger and bring it to me, or ask a friend or family member for help. We can always resize the ring, but starting close saves time.

  • Settle on a rough budget before we meet. I'd rather design around your real number from the start. This way our in-person meeting will be more efficient.

  • Bring photos. Screenshots of rings your partner has admired, along with photos of jewelry your partner already wears, can tell me a great deal about their style.

  • Tell me what you already know. Does your partner prefer platinum, yellow, white, or rose gold? Will the ring need to stand up to frequent use of their hands? Do they prefer vintage details or a clean, modern style?
